Confined Space Rescue Entry Permit Requirements

The confined space entry permit needs to have all the sections completed accurately before anyone enters the space to work. The permit becomes a very useful document to reference should anything go wrong whilst people are in the confined space.

What a Permit Is and When You Need One

The written permit required under the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 for work in a confined space that poses a specified risk to a person in that space (such as toxic atmosphere, risk of engulfment etc.) outlines the work to be carried out, by whom and under what conditions.

Hazard and Atmospheric Testing Records

All identified hazards must be listed on the permit. In addition, the results of all the prior atmospheric testing (oxygen, flammable gases and toxic substances) must be recorded before entry. The retesting frequency for the shift must also be recorded on the permit.

Authorisation and Sign-Off Chain

A permit must be authorized by a competent person prior to entry and a second person’s signature may be required for high risk entries, but the only person who can cancel a permit is the authorized person.

Time Limits and Cancellation Rules

For all permits to be effective they should clearly state the commencement time and finish time of the permit and clearly set out the method of cancellation should it become necessary during the permit’s validity. If during a task the conditions change then the permit must be cancelled immediately and a new permit issued prior to commencement of new work.

Rescue Arrangements on the Permit

Rescue methods must be detailed on the permit before entry can commence. The method and the responsible person must be recorded on the permit. More on Confined Space Rescue can be found at https://www.agofirerescue.com/confined-space-rescue.

A completed permit will ensure that the worker is safe to enter the space and can provide proof of compliance should it be required in the future.
