Blisters: why they happen
Friction (skin rubbing) plus moisture and heat equals blisters.
Common triggers include:
Shoes that are too big or too tight
Clothing factors such as wearing thin socks, non-cotton-based materials, or rubbed edges
Wet feet from rain or sweat
Prevention tips
Opt for moisture-wicking running socks (and maybe double-layer socks)
Lace up running shoes to prevent heel lifts
Apply blister plasters or tape to any pre-existing friction points
Keep toenails trimmed and smooth.
Black toenails: what’s going on?
A black toenail is essentially a bruise below the nail, often due to repeated pressure – most commonly from your toe hitting the front of your shoe on downhills or shoes that are just too small.
Prevention tips
The front of the shoe should have a thumb’s width worth of space.
If it feels like your toes are crammed in, check out a wider toe box.
Consider updated insoles or socks, and re-check the fit.
When to get it checked
If you suffer from acute pain, redness, or swelling of the nail area, or any signs of infection. Drainage – if a blister opens and starts draining fluid. Multiple swollen toes that appear to be infected can be a sign that your immune system is not working well. If you are someone at risk for complications (bad circulation), previous blisters turning black underneath, or the toenail doesn’t grow back normally, don’t wait, but see a podiatrist.
