Adjustable Weight Bench Width and Stability
To a degree, the width of the weight bench and its stability, for lifting weights, is more important than most people buying a weight bench would imagine.
Pad Width and Body Fit
Pads are usually between 25cm and 32cm wide, but this can vary. A narrower bench is perfect for smaller framed users allowing for a sufficient retraction of the shoulder blades. However, a wider bench feels better and allows for a greater arm movement. We’ve included the pad width in the specifications of the adjustable weight bench for your reference.
Foot Spread and Lateral Wobble
Bench with four spread legs are way more stable from side to side than ones with a very narrow base. Check the width of the foot print of the legs – it should be at least 60 cm between the two widest points of all legs. Most Adjustable Weight Benches have a triangular or H-frame base that sits very stable on the floor.
Weight Capacity as a Stiffness Indicator
A higher weight rating typically means that the frame of the adjustable weight bench is made from heavier gauge steel allowing little flex and ‘bounce’ when lifting heavy. The frame needs to be strong enough to support the user(s) in the different positions, therefore safe strength training principles dictate that the base of the bench should remain stable.
Rubber Feet and Floor Contact
Large rubber feet on a stable weight bench enable the floor to be gripped well. They distribute the load on the floor, so a stable weight bench is ensured. Good rubber feet are at least 5 cm wide and on one side even with a ribbed or even rough surface. Thin rubber pads on a weight bench can wear off quickly and slip on smooth floors.
Run a Wobble Check on Arrival
When receiving your home gym equipment, conduct a wobble check by setting the bench to its highest incline and gently push the bench to the left and right with your hands. If the bench wobbles, this could indicate a problem with the feet of the bench or the frame itself. If your weight bench is solid when you lift, then you can focus on your form.
