What to do if your roof is leaking due to nail holes

A leaking roof is one of the most-frustrating and inconvenient things about being a homeowner (or tenant), and it’s also one of the main reasons that roofs need to be sealed or replaced. One of the primary causes of roof leaks is nail holes.

Nail holes

These can be the result of incorrect nail use, poor installation, or nails that ‘pop-up’ over time Any of these can create small gaps which water can seep into. This water can then get trapped beneath the shingles, travel under the roofing material, and accumulate in one particular area. This can result in damage to the structure and interior of a building.

The most common place for leaks to occur is around the nails that are holding the shingles in place. However, they can also occur around flashing, along gaps in the roof, or along roof edges.

Main signs of a nail hole leak

The main signs which indicate that you may have a nail hole leak on your roof are:

– Water stains (on interior walls and/or ceilings)
– Discoloured or damp insulation in the loft space
– Mould or mildew on interior surfaces
– Dripping water from the roof
– Visible moisture on/under the roof

Experts in roof sealant

One way to add protection to your roof is to use roof sealant. There are several firms who specialise in roof sealant options. Many of these companies also have useful online resources – such as the examples seen here ct1.com/product-applications/ct1-the-ultimate-roof-sealant.

Fixing the roof

If you believe that you have a leak due to nail holes, there are two options: attempt to fix it yourself, or get a specialist to deal with it.

You should only attempt to fix the issue yourself if you have significant experience in roof repairs as well as the necessary skills and tools.

If you do not have this experience – or the problem seems too large for you to fix – then it is both safer and wiser to hire a professional roofer to undertake repairs for you.
