As a breed, ragdoll is relatively new to the cat world, but their popularity soared almost immediately. They are a medium sized breed with long fluffy coats that can be found in a variety of colours including tortoiseshell, tabby, chocolate, seal and many more. The fur around their neck areas forms a ruff similar to a mane on a lion, but shorter and they have what is known as knickerbockers around their legs. You often find that their feet, tails, ears and nose areas are dark shades of fur than on the rest of their body and the silky quality means that you just want to spend all day stroking them.

The personality of this type of breed is one of playfulness and affection. They often remain kitten-like for around five ears which is what makes them great family pets. Although like most cats they don’t appreciate a change to their routine or environment they are general easy-going and very placid animals. Ragdolls are very attention seeking and will often follow their owners around the house and will be seen trying to involve themselves in any children’s play that is going on. Eager to explore and play they will be the first ones to start playing with any toys or stimulating items that you leave around the house for them.

As incredible social creatures you will often find them curled up with another pet in the house or on the lap of one of the people in the house. They also like to be picked up and will go floppy in your arms hence the name ragdoll. This is very different to other cat breeds who will try to wriggle away if you pick them up for a cuddle. Ragdolls have an overriding desire to be in your company and will almost put up with anything if it means that have company and affection.

One important thing to consider when looking at this breed is the need for regular grooming to ensure their fur stay healthy and silky and that the occurrence of knots is reduced greatly.

Some of these cars would not fall into that category in a million years. So, in no particular order, which is a comment on the gearing for some of them, here is a selection of just some of the worst.

Reliant Robin Rialto. A 3 wheeled car made of plastic fibreglass; one of the colours being custard yellow. I don’t really need to right any more than that you would have thought but this little nightmare of a car was for a time quite popular and was being made up until 2002! The reason for its success was related to the fact that you didn’t need a full driving licence to drive it. As it was three wheels a motorcycle licence was enough and the road tax was lower.  There was every chance that the car would roll over if a bend was taken too fast but as it was powered by an engine akin to a large ride on lawn mower this was rare.

Austin Allegro. Sticking with terrible British cars from the nineteen seventies the Allegro was one of the more expensive errors made by the now defunct British motor industry. The car was to feature a radical design that included a neat aerodynamic template that was cleverly placed at the back of the car so that when you went in reverse it was quicker. It is mainly remembered for having a square steering wheel (and yes I am perfectly aware of the oxymoronic nature of that sentence).  To show how bad it really is there is very little affection attributed to the horrid thing. The yellow and brown two tone colour schemes where particularly hideous.

The Ford Edsel. Just to show that the Americans can do failure, and on a much grander scale, we have the Edsel. This was an enormous showy car brought out just when Americans were starting to want smaller more efficient ones. This did not stop a huge $400 million dollar campaign to sell the thing being spent on it. The other problem was the grill. It looked like a loo seat. To be fair to it the car itself mechanically was fine and one is even featured in the Science Museum’s collection at Swindon due to its innovative braking and lubrication system, which modern cars went on to use.

When I was young we only had one Television. This wasn’t much of a problem as it only had 3 channels anyway and it was also only a black and white one. Its not like I was watching anything that needed colour because for the most part my watching was dominated by soap operas. I didn’t actually want to watch them, in fact I despised them. Even as I child I thought they were a terrible waste of the medium and still do. Back then the signal was dependant on how good a reception you got as everything ran on analogue waves of signal rather than a digital or satellite one. My life after school followed a pattern. I went around to my elderly Uncles house to keep him company and we watched kids shows whilst he made me Camp Coffee and Chocolate Digestives. The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Thundercat’s even Blue Peter this was television at its best. My Dad would come around and it was time to take the short walk back home for Tea. After listening to the Radio for tea the Television was turned on and my Mother would immediately make her way into the sitting room for the first one of the night. The gentle sounds of Crossroads came on. This was my Mothers cue to settle in and watch the machinations of the Mortimer’s and debonair Adam Chance as they steered their way through the murky world of mid lands Motel management able assisted by Benny and Scottish Chef Shouie Macfee. I hated Crossroads with a passion mainly because it was on at the same time the BBC had decided to run Doctor Who. It had swapped it from a Saturday tea time show to a half hour instalment weekday. Result I never got to see it. We didn’t have a video recorder because they were way out of our price range.

It got worse as I got older and the television executives realised that here was a cheap way of ensuring high viewing figures. On a Tuesday night we started with Crossroads then we went straight to Emmerdale Farm at Seven that took us to Seven thirty for EastEnders and then back to ITV for Coronation Street then finally we ended with Brookside on Channel Four. In the daytime Mother had Take the High Road and the Archers on a Sunday morning. Thank goodness she never got into Albion Market and Eldorado.

  • Men were the first people to wear make-up.   • Shaving used to be fraught with danger and a cut from the blade would result in more than embarrassment because you forgot to remove the tiny bit of tissue paper before you walked into the office. There were numerous cases of men dying from infections that set in following a cut that wasn’t properly cleaned. Lockjaw was a very common illness caused by an infected wound.
  • Pink originally started off as a man’s colour and back in the 18th Century men would wear silk suits in pink that were embroidered with flowers. These suits symbolised the man’s social standing and they often took up high powered positions and commanded great respect. It wasn’t until the 1960s that gender specific colours for babies was introduced and moved pink away from a high status male colour to that of baby girls.

  • High heels began with men too. Back in Egyptian times the men in high positions would wear high heels to stand apart from all the other men who would be bare foot. Images of this can be seen in hieroglyphs. Butchers in particular would spend much of their day in high heels so as to step over the carcasses that lay around. For years men would wear heeled shoes until the platform shoes became an incredible hit in the 1970s.
